Membership
Membership is a way of supporting the journal’s open-access publishing. It is voluntary, it is independent of the editorial process, and it carries no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own work.
What membership is
Support, held apart from assessment
Open-access publishing is paid for by the community that uses it. Membership is one of the ways researchers and institutions choose to contribute to that cost, alongside the article processing charge raised on accepted manuscripts.
Independence
Editorial decisions remain independent of fees, memberships, roles and paid services.
Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member's own manuscripts. A member's submission is screened, reviewed and decided on exactly the terms set out in the Editorial Policies, and reviewers are not told whether an author is a member.
Assessment
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Current terms
Membership categories, rates and periods are set by the publisher and are confirmed by the editorial office on request. Write to [email protected] for the terms that currently apply.
Publication charges
The article processing charge and the terms attached to it are published on the Article Processing Charges page and apply to every accepted manuscript on the same basis.
Where a benefit is not published here, it is because the journal does not yet hold confirmed terms for it. The editorial office will confirm what applies before anyone is asked to commit.
