About the International Physiology Journal

The International Physiology Journal publishes peer-reviewed research on how biological function is produced, regulated and maintained. Its subject is physiology at every level of organization — from transport and signaling across a single membrane to the response of an intact organism — together with the relationships that connect one level to the next.

No single level is the journal’s center of gravity. A membrane conductance, a perfusion measurement, a control loop between two organ systems and a whole-body response to an environmental load are all physiology, and all are within remit.

Four levels of organization, read across a single field: cell, tissue, organ system, whole organism.

The journal’s perspective

Function is only visible at some level of organization

Physiology is the study of function, and a finding about function always belongs to a scale: a membrane, a tissue, an organ system, an animal. The journal is organized around that fact, and takes questions at each level on their own terms.

  1. Membrane and cell

At the smallest scale the interest is mechanism: transport, excitability, signal transduction and the energetics that make cellular work possible. Studies here establish what a cell or a membrane does under stated conditions, and that description is the ground everything above it rests on.

  2. Tissue and microcirculation

Between cell and organ lies the tissue environment: perfusion, the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and the local conditions under which cells do their work. This is often where a mechanism first meets a measurable physiological consequence.

  3. Organ systems

Cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, metabolic, neural and muscular function are each studied in their own right, and so are the control loops that couple one system to another. Regulation between systems is treated as a subject, not as a complication.

  4. Integrated organism

At the largest scale physiology is the behavior of an intact animal or person: under load, across development, in a changed environment, in disease. Comparative and environmental work belongs here alongside human studies, and so do the methods that make such measurement possible.

Research that moves deliberately between these levels is welcome, and so is work that stays within one of them and does it well. The journal’s published record illustrates this range; it does not set its boundary.

Readership

Who the journal is for

  • Experimental physiologists working at the bench, in the laboratory or in the field
  • Integrative and systems physiologists concerned with regulation across organs
  • Comparative and environmental physiologists, in human and animal work alike
  • Researchers developing, validating or critiquing physiological measurement and methods
  • Graduate researchers and teachers who need open, citable primary literature

The journal welcomes substantive scholarship that advances the understanding, measurement or interpretation of physiological function at any level of organization. A contribution may rest on new experimental evidence, on the refinement or validation of a method, or on the reinterpretation of existing physiological findings.

Editorial responsibility

What the journal undertakes to do with a manuscript

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Reviewers are asked to assess whether the physiological claim is supported by the conditions and measurements reported, and editors are responsible for holding a decision to that standard.

Editorial decisions are independent of fees, services, membership, and editorial or reviewer roles.

Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions; those manuscripts are handled independently.
