About the Journal of Nephrology Advances
A peer-reviewed, open-access journal of kidney science: how the kidney works, how it fails, how kidney disease is measured and treated, and how people living with kidney disease are cared for.
Written for nephrologists and renal scientists, dialysis and transplant teams, methodologists and population researchers, and the clinicians in other specialties whose patients have kidney disease.
Scientific breadth
One journal for the whole of kidney science
Kidney research is carried out by people who rarely share a meeting room. A laboratory group studying tubular injury, a trial team testing a therapy, a unit measuring dialysis adequacy and an epidemiologist tracking kidney outcomes in a population are all working on the same organ from different directions. The journal exists to give that work one address, to put it through independent peer review, and to publish it openly.
Every article is free to read from the day it appears, for clinicians in every health system and for the patients, caregivers and policy readers who follow kidney research. Four areas of work sit side by side within the journal’s remit.
Renal biology and fundamental science
How the kidney is built, how it functions, and how it is injured and repaired, studied through laboratory, experimental and computational work.
Clinical nephrology
The diagnosis, course, complications and treatment of kidney disease across the life course, including kidney replacement therapy and transplantation.
Methods, diagnostics and observational research
How kidney function and disease are measured, classified, imaged and studied, with descriptive, observational, replication and validation studies.
Populations, services and evidence synthesis
Kidney health in populations, prevention and patient-reported outcomes, the services and models of care through which kidney care reaches people, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Mechanistic, experimental, clinical, diagnostic, methodological and population-based studies are each assessed on their own terms. Scope eligibility rests on the substantive nephrology question; methodological rigor and reporting quality are assessed separately. Other subjects with a substantive connection to kidney science, disease or care are also within scope, as set out on the Aims and Scope page.
Editorial accountability
Who is responsible for the journal
- Editorial stewardship
- The Editor-in-Chief and the editorial board provide scholarly stewardship by overseeing peer review and upholding publication ethics. Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions; those manuscripts are handled independently.
- Screening and peer review
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decisions
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships and roles.
